Letter from the President – Cathy S

Aug 2021

Greetings all,

As I start to write this letter I literally just say, “I am so blessed to have you all”.  It was in response to an email, but again, I really am blessed to be President of such an amazing group of women.  I have been involved with GLWA for over 20 years, and I will never stop saying this one thing, “We are an incredible group of women with a scope and span that no other group can ever touch”.  In the course of one week, I was contacted by 3 groups looking for partners for upcoming events.  Ever stop to think about how far we reach?  Seriously?  The museum, the food pantry and the animal shelter are looking for volunteers for upcoming events and they come to us, GLWA, because we support and champion what and who they are.    That’s what we do, and how awesome is that?  Way more than we like to think it’s just about being there for them, and not necessarily dollars in their coffers.  Raising Hopes is a big thing, Raising Funds definitely matters, and Raising Spirits is what we might be known for best of all.  GLWA is a formidable force in our community.  We Matter and We Make a Difference in so many ways.

No pressure there for our newest members:  Judi, Nancy, Val and Deb. We welcome you to GLWA and look forward to a great partnership with you as we move into this year.  Hey guess what?  LOTS going on ……….. LOTS LOTS LOTS.  Ready set and GO ……. Das Fest ……… Venetian Fest ………. Ladies Day Luncheon …. Harvest Dinner ……Parade of Trees…. Holiday Helping Hands …………. Welcome to 2022 ………. Who is running for the Board …………. Happy New Year ….. Who is running for the Board ………… Happy Valentine’s Day …………? Here is our slate of candidates ………… Boom!!

The July bash was amazing!  Thank you Laura and Jeff for your beautiful lakefront home, Social Committee for great food and fun, and to all our members and guests in their natty nautical gear fighting fiercely for that prized boat cruise.  We raised just shy of $300, and our winner is graciously sharing her voyage with us.

There is always business to conduct.  At the August meeting we will be asking for approval for several donations and sharing some fantastic updates from a recent fundraiser event.  The need continues in our community and if you have ideas about ways that GLWA can help an organization or generate funds, please do not be shy.  We can be pretty darn creative when we get together and best-case scenario is a win/win for all involved with a dose of fun thrown in for good measure.

As always, a huge thank you to my fellow board members who continue to find ways to move GLWA forward with technology that I may never understand.  Your talents are truly appreciated.  We see daily social media posts, a vibrant engaging website and activity calendar, new ways to process payments and event registrations, secure document storage and so much more.  Your dedication and hard work never cease to amaze.

I look forward to seeing you at the August 09 meeting.

Members are always welcome to bring their dues payments to a meeting.

We’re sending positive vibes to (several GLWA members) during this time.

Treasure is updating GLWA’s rack card / brochure.  This will be instrumental in getting our message out for soliciting new members or for information purposes.  She hopes to have it available for Venetian Fest.

Laurie’s Social Committee met with the director of DAS Fest, on Wed, 8/4, and should have an update.

Penny has a size lge ‘Anchors Aweigh’ sweatshirt available—wrong size.  Please let her know if you have interest.

Member meetings will involve 3 persons to share in providing snacks, drinks & décor so it doesn’t fall solely to the host.

ONLINE BIDDING UPDATE:  We have narrowed down two online auction services to use at different fundraising events.  We will be presenting those at the meeting for your review and possible vote.  Thank you Missy & Treasure

Financial Requests:  1) Board recommendation of $250 to Walworth Country Food and Diaper Bank (WCFDB) for their Back to School Marketplace.  They are not accepting actual items, just monetary donations to provide registered students with all their necessary school supplies.  In August, children will be invited to come to the WCFDB for the School Days Market where they will be able to select their own school supplies for the new school year.

2) Board recommendation of $300 to Barnyard Adventure Agricultural Education Program as a financial request.  GLWA’s name and logo would be listed on the Walworth County Fair’s website, social media, and onsite signage.  The Walworth County Fair is Sep 1-6.

3) The board approved a golf hole sponsorship for the Geneva Lake Museum golf outing on Sept 19th.

What can you bring to the meeting:

  1. “Stuff the backpack” $$$ to help fund school supplies at the pantry
  2. Dues that need to be paid
  3. LDL donation items
  4. Chair to sit on
  5. Beverage to share
  6. Great attitude, your smile and ideas

Thanks, Cathy

Current GLWA Fundraisers / Drives

Ended 7/26 WELL DONE!   2nd Annual GLWA GIVES Tampon & Pad Online Drive.  Benefits the Walworth County Food Pantry & Diaper Bank.

A note from our member & GLWA VP, Treasure Sperry, who spearheaded the 2nd Annual drive to include GLWA:  “Thank you to everyone who gave to my mini-drive, aptly named GLWA GIVES since we will be giving them to the Walworth County Food Pantry & Diaper Bank as the fantastic group that we are.  And thank you to Georgia for offering up her home to receive the packages.  Last year I had nowhere to put those, so she kindly offered up her space.

I will be going to Georgia’s on Thu, 8/5, to unbox everything and take a photo.

Excluding any potential new or late surprise donations, we have over 260 donations!  That is 200.763% more than when I was doing it on my own last year.  Imagine our potential for next year with more sharing of this drive with our friends.  FYI, that adds up to almost 10k products that will go to women & young ladies in Walworth County. ☺
